Why did we do it?

jj-pic-005bJenny ( previously a nurse in the NHS, working in rehabilitation) had an auntie & uncle who for many years ran a small B&B in the Lake District. They told her it was the best years of their lives, they are now retired.

With this in mind Jenny & I (a retired police officer having served 32 years in Lincolnshire & Humberside) decided we would like to semi- retire to the Scottish Highlands and try our hand at running a small B&B.
We purchased ‘Bedrock’, a lovely bungalow close to the local distillery at Balmenach. A few modifications were required and then, in 2012, we were ready to open our B&B. We called it after ourselves – ‘J & J’s.

Our dream

We wanted to offer luxury accommodation in a rural setting, but not too far from local amenities. The small town of Grantown on Spey is only 3 miles away.

2012 was a good learning experience and we had guests from all over the world. Jenny’s expertise in the kitchen earned many glowing reviews. As our local knowledge increased we were able to offer advice on what to do and where to go in the area.

2013 saw our business increase by 100%. This was helped by more targeted marketing and, hopefully, a growing reputation.

We look forward to 2014 and beyond.

Where are we?

We are within the Cairngorm National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The local wildlife is right on the doorstep and is a pleasure to behold. If you are looking for the ‘quiet life’ then you will find it here.
With our own passion for the out doors, we believe that the outdoor activities are the main theme of this area.
These include:- Walking, fishing, golf, cycling, Speyside Whisky Trail, historic Scotland (e.g. castles etc.). The ski resorts at The Lecht & Cairngorm are within easy reach.
We are happy to share our home with guests who want a quiet, rural location and appreciate quality accommodation and good food.

But don’t take our word for it. Read what our visitors have to say.

We stayed here for one night during a short trip to the Highlands. Everything about our stay was absolutely spot on. We were welcomed with a pot of tea and homemade flapjack. The rooms were modern, comfortable and very clean. The quiet, countryside location was idyllic. The breakfast was excellent and included eggs from the chickens in the garden. A top class B&B, highly recommended.

We spent a few nights here and John and Jenny made us feel completely at home. They’re so friendly and welcoming, the tea and cake on arrival was a lovely unexpected touch (delicious too). There are always yummy smells coming from Jenny’s kitchen! Our room was lovely and big and very comfortable with a beautiful view over the Cromdale hills where we spotted all sorts of wildlife. John said they’ve spotted deer before too! Nothing is too much trouble and Jenny and John have a great knowledge of the local area. One evening they pointed us in the direction of the “pie and mash” pub in a local village which was delicious, you should definitely ask for directions when you visit.

Jenny’s homemade cooked breakfast needed a section all of it’s own. It was possibly the best breakfast we’ve ever had but then nothing is simply standard at their house. Plenty of bacon and sausages, the full works with a choice of eggs. We even got homemade wild raspberry jam from the raspberry bushes in the lane near the bungalow. John also makes a very good waiter!

We would definitely visit again. The hospitality is second to none and the location is ideal for getting to the Cairngorms, Inverness and Loch Ness. Oh and the stars! We’ve never seen so many and we were lucky enough to see some shooting stars too. We would recommend this little B&B every day of the week.

We can’t wait to go back!!

We’ve just come back from a 3 night stay at this fabulous place to stay.
Jen and John are excellent hosts , and go to great lengths to make your stay pleasurable and truly memorable. The rooms are spacious , modern and spotlessly clean, with lots of special extra touches in your room, such as home made biscuits and hot chocolate, aswell as tea and coffee.
The breakfasts are out of this world , with an endless choice , and fresh eggs from their own chickens.
We would highly recommend this as a place to stay , and will definately be returning .
